Anyone else disapopinted by Esca?

Three of us had trouble getting in on Saturday night, that's how crowded it was, but someone cancelled and we had the misfortune to be called. Our table was next to the bar and I sat facing a computer screen. Service was erratic and weird. We could hardly understand the waiter, then a team would come to plop down the plates and one of them would grab the plate away before you were ready to relinquish it.

The appetizer portion of a sashimi type mackeral was miniscule and salty (because of an anchovy sauce). Salad was fine. Everything else was too salty, particularly the fritto misto (which was accompanied by a bland sauce) and the tasteless sea bass. My fish stew was okay, ample, but by then, I was turned off. Bread is served dry (and it's rather tasteless) with no olive oil or butter.

Service was less than cordial, not particularly efficient, somehow off. The waiter realized we weren't enjoying ourselves but was not concerned. Prices are high.

My husband had prepared them that it was my birthday, but I didn't want to linger over dessert so didn't order one, which resulted in some dry, biscotti arriving, also tasteless.

Has anyone had similar or different experiences there?
