Dino's Burgers

TE | Apr 11, 2003 10:46 PM

Following a recommendation in the "cheap food in Los Feliz/Silverlake" thread, I went to Dino's Burgers -- at Pico and Berendo, nowhere near Los Feliz or Silver Lake -- this afternoon and ordered the chicken plate. I'm ready to go back again.

Half a chicken on a bed of fries. Chicken's grilled, and (as mentioned in the earlier post, for which endless gratitude) orange as a result of the seasoning, which I couldn't really place. Kind of like Lawry's with maybe some vinegar? Anyway, it was terrific. The fries were soggy with the juice and seasoning; fine by me. Accompanied by a little cup of watery cole slaw; all under $4. Add a medium soft drink and you still get change from a fiver.

Just a burger shack, with a few tables. Looks as though it's been there since the '50s, and the area is a little run down, though nothing to be ashamed or afraid of. Neighborhood is largely Latino, with lots of mom & pop-style places to eat along Pico. There's free parking in a side lot; plenty of street parking.

Sideshow entailed sitting at one of the tables tearing away at my bird (so to speak) and watching about nine guys, probably from one of the couple of nearby schools, walk in to the "order" window:

"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."
"Chicken plate."

Like Versailles, I wonder if anybody ever orders anything other than the signature dish. And why.
