Din Tai Fung - What am I missing??

Having read many glowing reports but being a west-sider, I was very excited when we just coincidentally drove by while in Arcadia for other things. There were however, approx 40 people in line for lunch, and since we were in the area for a different purpose, we thought we'd ask if they did take-out.

They did. First bad thing - Service was not with a smile. Could have been because we were the only caucasians w/o asians in our party, maybe not, but no one looked at us, much less offered to help, and while there were many ahead of us, the staff began helping those who came in after us as well, until a very nice gentleman said - uh, I think these guys are in front of me.

On to the food. We got a variety as we'd never been. Shrimp and pork dumplings, vegetable dumpings, pork and veg buns, sesame buns, and a sticky rice/pork thing where the rice was the wrapper. Ok. Absolutely nothing memorable here. In fact, all food verged on mediocre to just bad, much worse than dim sum at VIP Seafood that I am used to, but that constantly gets a bad rap on the board. The fillings were uninspired, the wrappers were gummy and over-thick, and the rice/pork thing was just terrible. About a 10-1 rice/pork ratio, a gummy, sticky mess, with the outside having no flavor and the inside strongly and unpleasantly spiced with something which I couldn't place.

I really wanted to like the place - apparently everyone else does. Did I just totally strike out on the food choices?
