We had a dim sum lunch at the new Mandalay restaurant in downtown Honolulu on Alakea Street, site of the former Yong Sing restaurant. The renovated space is nicely done and attractive, service was prompt and courteous, including hot tea and water refills.
There are no rolling carts, you order off a menu and items come out of the kitchen. This is where they need to improve a bit. At similar dim sum places I've experienced particularly in Vancouver, dim sum from the kitchen is freshly made and arrives piping hot at the table. A number of items we had, particularly the baked and deep fried dim sum were warm, not hot which indicated they were sitting in the kitchen.
The steamed shrimp dumplings, steamed char siu bao and mochi rice in lotus leaf were the best items, good flavor and piping hot. Deep fried taro puffs, baked char siu pastries and baked egg tarts were good, but suffered from being just warm. The steamed scallop spinach dumpling, deep fried spring rolls and Chiu Chow dumplings I liked the least and were just ok. Overall I give the dim sum was a solid B grade, and at $36 for three people including tax and tip it is worth another visit to try other dim sum items and noodles. A nice addition to the Honolulu dining scene.
