Derek's in Manayunk- more about the scene than the food

Decided to try this place on Saturday night and we were pretty disappointed overall. The place is very crowded and very noisy, and we usually don't mind either. The food was hit and miss and pretty average overall. They do the small plates/big plates thingy which makes it hard to gage how big portion sizes are. For starters we had spinach and crab enchiladas and shrimp risotto, both not bad but heavy handed and clumsy. For entrees the lamb chops were fairly tasty but two small chops for $16.95 was very disappointing and the whole grilled red snapper for $24.95 was pretty bland and tasteless.

They have this ridiculous "half-price" wine list that initially sounds like a great deal, that is until I saw that the Wrongo Dongo Jumilla that we ordered (which was very good) was listed at $52 and "discounted" to $26 (and then listed on their regular wine list at $34!). Now this is about an $8-9 bottle of wine so to list it at $52 and then "discount" it to $26 still means 300% mark-up. Pretty slick unless you know what wine sells for. Then the waiter brings the bottle and proceeds to pour nearly the entire bottle into our glasses in one pour! I wanted to scream. The bread basket arrived and, while it was generous, it was nearly all burnt and should have never been served. We sat in the front booth by the window and then the overflow crowd standing at the frot door waiting for tables were nearly sitting in our laps. If you want serious food go somewhere else, unless of course you like watching Rocky III on the large screen TV by the bar as you eat! Boy, is there any place worth eating at in Manayunk any more? We were going to try the new Thai place (Chiabaa) which looked nice.
