We went there for dinner tonight because they announced that they were having a special chef's tasting menu from Friday to Sunday, in celebration of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.
Having had many fabulous meals here over the past few years, we immediately made reservations, and we were eagerly looking forward to Debu Saha's creations.
The meal was very disappointing. There is a meat tasting menu at $45 per person, and a vegetarian menu at $38. We were two, and we ordered the meat and the vegetarian. The portions were skimpy, and the food was not freshly prepared but seemed, rather, to have been reheated (not a problem with braised greens, but a no-no with lamb chops!). The usual depth of flavour and inventive cuisine we've come to love at this restaurant were totally absent tonight.
We are wondering if, perhaps, the chef went back home to celebrate Diwali and created a simplified menu for his replacements in the kitchen. The regular menu was not even available for those who would have preferred to order from it.
I do hope that this was a one-time only occurrence. This is a lot of people's favourite Indian restaurant in Toronto.
