This is actually two questions in one posting:
The first one: Where can I get good dan dan mien? I tried it once in Chinatown in Boston, but wasn't too impressed, (the restaurant was supposedly a Shanghai specialty one as well.) Is it a meal, or a soup? Or, is it a soupy meal?
and second: I'm always curious as to whether there are any good restaurants located beneath the street level of Chinatown. I'm not talking the Sweet-n-Tart Cafe types, but the ones with narrow stairs with the small signs hidden from the public. The ones I see (basement stores, that is) are usually for video games or hair salons. But I was wondering, are there any good places that actually exist down there? Has anyone been daring to try? I'm willing to, but I need a nudge.
Let me know.....
