***Curry-Diving: Invitation to Chowdown on Tues, 3/23, and Beyond

Melanie Wong | Mar 18, 2004 02:26 PM

The Masala Hounds invite you to join their hunt for the best of South Asian cooking. All are welcome – newcomers and regulars.

Some have asked where the term “curry dive” originated. A few years ago, curry-loving employees of SF’s British Consulate adopted it to refer to the downscale daba-style hole-in-the-wall Indo-Pakistani dive eateries that dot the Tenderloin. Since then some of the original curry dives have cleaned up their acts and become known outside their ethnic communities, but we still use the moniker with affection.

Tuesday, March 23, 7:30pm – San Francisco Location

“Please join us for another round of curry-diving on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. This time we'll be venturing South of Market in San Francisco. They've got a Shalimar alum on staff, and as an added bonus, easy parking! Beer will be the drink of choice, so please bring a favorite to share. Food cost per person should be in the realm of $15.” Please RSVP to Mel (beanbag) at melbeanie3@yahoo.com.

Intrigued by reports of a quirky yet talented Scottish-Armenian cook brought up in Allahabad turning out exceptional North Indian cuisine? If there’s enough interest, we’ll set up a Saturday night chowdown/winedown here to test-drive the kitchen. Cost per person will be approximately $40, including tax, tip and corkage, plus at least one special bottle of wine to share.

If you’re game, email Ruth Lafler, rlafler@ucsbalum.net, to indicate your interest and what wine you’ll be bringing. Please be as specific as possible about your wine selection so that we can ensure diversity of choices and avoid duplication. We’re happy to provide suggestions for what to bring.

There are several more venues – Alhamra, Nawab, Udupi Palace, Chaat Café, Kabana, Saroor, Vik’s, Mughal (formerly Bar B Q Tonite), etc. – that we’re interested in adding to the chowdown series. We’re in need of hosts to help put these together. If you’d like to volunteer to organize an outing to one of these restaurants or another favorite, please contact Melanie Wong, MsWine@onebox.com, to schedule a slot on the curry-diving calendar.

This is a private, volunteer assisted event. No agency relationship, express or implied exists between any parties and Chowhound, Inc. This is not a Chowhound, Inc. sponsored event.
