Cuban--Cafe Laguardia

Boyfriend had recommended a return trip to Rancho Luna(which I was only semi-interested in). I had encouraged a trip to a different "Cuban" experience. Metromix had recommended Cafe Laguardia, I called and found it was a 40-minute wait on a Saturday evening at 7:15p.m.

First disappointment: the ability to make a reservation was there. I called and inquired about the wait, person answering phone never said, "would you like to put your name in?".

After 40 minutes upon arrival, and two begged-for sangrias, I approached host about pager #5. We had been crossed off the list. Host then said, "you are the next to be seated." The pager never lit up, buzzed, whatever. We ended up waiting near the host stand and eventually got seated.

Ordered special appetizer: shrimp and cheese empanada.

Second disappointment: rubbery, overcooked shrimp in the empanada.

We enjoyed the "swank" atmosphere with semi-authentic Cuban menu, but it was all a little much.

Host apologized on the way out about the "wait". We were crossed off when I inquired, so I'm not sure what the apology was for...crossing us off the list before we were even seated?

I was happy with the Cuban sandwich, although I wanted the "midnight" , or sweet egg bread version and was told "we're out of it". My date ordered special menu pork stew with potatoes, peas, tomato-garlic based spicy sauce. Very good....

Ordered fried plantanos as a dessert and waited and waited. Also had to request the check after waiting way too long for the plantanos.

A return trip will not be forthcoming. Chowhounds, should I return to Rancho Luna(semi-satisfied) or try Ambassador Cafe, or another place?

Bon Appetit!
