I went to Crown Heights area in Brooklyn yesterday. Took subway to Utica Ave. (Eastern Parkway). Yes, this is the epicenter of Brookolyn chow chow. The area is 100% carribean, almost. I walked south on Utica Ave. for 3 blocks. There I saw smoke coming out from Jerk Chicken drum. I bought some Jerk chicken at "Chicken Center Inc." Yes, it's incorporated! Outside of the store on the street, a carribean guy was taking care of bbqing perfect Jerk Chicken while inside, There was an oriental man at the back of the store over a bullet-proof glass taking care of money (partnership? or exploitation? I hope not). So I paid $7 for 2 pcs of Jerk Chicken. I gave the receipt to the carribean guy and he started cutting the Jerk Chicken that was done earlier. It was 2 and 1/2 pcs of big chicken legs (my favorite part of chicken, much better than tasteless breast) with skin (the most delicious part of course). I added some extra Jerk sauce over the cut up chicken pieces. I just sampled one piece at the spot. It was delicious!! Heavenly mixture of spices, tenderness of the chicken and smokey flavor of charcoal.
I took home and had the Jerk Chicken with my favorite cheap wine "Yellowtail" from the down under. The Cab./Shiraz was perfect with this real deal chow from Crown Heights.
I will soon sampling other Jerk Chicken in the area.
Jerk Chicken I had before were dry and not tasty, but this Jerk Chicken yesterday changed my whole perspective about Jerk Chicken. Sorry, I underestimated the power of Jerk Chicken for too long.
