I know Creme Brulee is now a cliche, but every now and then I get the craving.
Having seen my previous favourite go downhill and suffering through several inferior versions at different restaurants, I discovered that the chef who produced my former favourite left last summer.
Celebrations can now resume - the chef has resurfaced at Avant Gout, a neighbourhood place (seating only 20 people) on Birch Avenue (Summerhill Subway).
Last night was a rediscovery - perfect contrast of hot and cold. Great creme with vanilla aromas. Perfect crunch on the caramel (actually had to wait about 30 seconds for it to harden) and a touch of the burnt character that sets off the sweetness perfectly. Best bruleee I've had for a couple of years.
The rest of the meal was pretty good too (if not in the same class). Total bill was about $115 for two with the most expensive (almost - truthfully $1 less) bottle of wine on their list included.
Great if you're in the neighbourhood - but worth a detour for the creme brulee. If anybody finds better, please post and let me know.
