I hit Crema Cafe for breakfast twice over the past week, and I have to say I was really quite impressed. Not sure if I just got lucky with my choices or if it's hitting more of a stride, but either way, everything I had was excellent:
* Cappuccino - one of the best I've had in town, this was a serious American coffeehouse-style capp, smooth and well-steamed milk, a dark espresso, presented nicely with a design in the foam. I didn't try the espresso on its own, so I can't speak to some hounds' complaints about it being over-roasted, but with the milk, it was very, very good. For my personal tastes, great proportion of milk to coffee, not too much milk, meaning there was plenty of good coffee flavor to be tasted. A small, finicky gripe: the ceramic cup was too thick, which took away a bit of subtlety from an otherwise terrific beverage.
* Drip coffee - I thought their house blend, which I believe is a custom roast from George Howell, was quite good. At the dark end of medium body, but none of the char you get in a French or Italian roast. Lost some complexity as it cooled off, but never went sour.
* Homemade English muffin - damn. This was every bit as good as everyone said. It had that yeasty English muffin taste, but a much lighter texture than you'd ever find in one from the supermarket. With butter and apricot jam, I could have this for breakfast every morning.
* Pain aux raisins - small, light, crispy, and airy, this was a wonderful pastry. In classic French style, the butter added a legitimate flavor. I wish they used currants instead of raisins, but it was excellent regardless. I liked this as much as any croissant I've had at Iggy's or Clear Flour. I'm excited to get back to try a plain butter croissant, which looked great as well.
I'll echo everyone else's comments that it's a nifty little two-story space. I'll be going here often, especially while school's out of session and there's some chance of actually getting a good seat.
