Went to try out New Concept last sunday per recommendation on LA times. We got there around 11am and there is a crowd of people waiting outside (the place is actually pretty small, no bigger than Sea Harbor @ Rosemead). The place seemed like an offshoot of a Mainland Chinese franchise but I have never seen that in China before - does anyone know?
We were seat after an half an hour wait. There is no dim sum cart and you have to order from the form. Dim Sum there is mostly standard fare with some creative items. For tea, we order "chrysanthemum- po'er" and the tea is pretty good.
WE started off our meal with egg tarts (the type that the curst is fluffy like crossiant) that were not on the menu but carried around on trays. It is very good - I'm addicted to this type of egg tart and this is one of the best I've tasted here.
Dim Sum, however, is hit and miss. The Har Gaw, Daikon Cake, Lavender Flavored red bean cake (dessert) is quite good; chicken feet (with satay sauce) and shark fin dumpling in soup is ok; Vegetarian Spring Roll, Roasted Duck Cheung Fun and Chiu Chow Dumpling is just ok.
Overall we feel that it is a decent meal, and it's definitely worth trying out. WE pay only $12/head and we were stuff so it's not a bad deal. However, the wait is a bit long, and Ocean Star still have the best execution of traditional Dim Sum. WE think that New Concept is trying to do something different a la Sea Harbor mode, but their innovative dishes really nothing so special or good.
side note: there are a few tables outside the main dining hall and you can have dim sum under sun light with view of a nice part of Monterey Park. However, there's no heat lamp and we wonder if it's all that nice??
