Tried out the new Trini spot in Hyde Park for lunch today. Nice selection so I just asked the owner to give me a "mix up" and try out a bit of everything.
Stew Beef, Curry Chicken, Callaloo, Pelau, Okra, Saltfish, Pumpkin and Plantain is what I ended up with on the plate. Stand outs were definitely the Pelau, Callaloo, Saltfish and Stew Beef. Everything else was solid. They also have 3 different types of pepper sauce, ask for a generous helping of all three and it will take the flavor up a notch.
They have some interesting specials on the weekend as well. Cow Heel Soup, Crab and Dumpling, Oil Down and Trini Style Chinese food. They also said their Sorrel and Mauby is being made now and should be ready to serve by next week.I plan on heading back to check them out again.
This is a nice change of pace from the typical Caribbean style Trini places that you find around the US and Canada, where they basically serve Roti, Doubles, Palourie and maybe a couple other items. Definitely want to support someone who is trying to diversify their menu.
