Last night my friend and I wanted to go somewhere in Silver Lake or Los Feliz that offered some small plates, had a good atmosphere and wasn't overly expensive. Decided to try Cliff's Edge and was very satisfied. We couldn't sit out in the garden due to the weather, but it did look fantasic with a huge tree right in the middle. Will have to go back when it gets drier. Anyway, the inside was very charming as well- a bar that seats roughly 12 people plus tables with chairs on one side and a sofa on the other. We had 7:30 reservations and were seated promptly.
The small but interesting menu has nothing over $20 on it..or maybe it was even lower than that. We decided to split one appetizer, one pasta and one "entree" although all of the dishes are about medium sized- not quite tapas-small but definitely not large.
We started out with the chicken liver and mushroom bruschetta. YUM. Sauteed chunks of chicken liver mixed with mushrooms (cooked in white wine and butter perhaps?) and bone marrow on a slice of crunchy/chewy french bread. I would have been happy with 3 orders of this (you get one large slice which is cut in half) and my wine. Excellent marriage of flavors. We then had the linguine with clams- fresh linguine, lots of clams and seasoned perfectly. We also had the top sirloin with gorgonzola and a red wine sauce w/ sauteed spinach. Sirloin was sliced into several pieces for easy eating and it was perfectly medium rare. Just a nicely cooked steak with just a small knob of of the cheese all sitting on a pile of spinach and coated in a luscious sauce. None of these dishes would win any originality prizes but they were all so well done- not an iota of seasoning was too much nor too little, and the textures and appearance were also perfect.
2 glasses of cab, 1 sparkling cider, 1 green apple martini and the food w/ tax and tip came out to $80.00. Excellent service. I'll definitely be going back, especially for the chicken liver bruschetta.
