Recently I discovered Aloo Bonda, an Indian snack food/appetizer previously unknown to me. This Great Discovery took place where my car (the Santa Pinto?) made landfall at Annapoorna in San Mateo, and unlike a certain Italian explorer, this time we found India.
Aloo Bonda is similar to a samosa in that its a fried spiced potato fritter-y thing. Thats where the similarities end. The A.B.s outside was composed of a super light, not at all greasy chickpea batter. The inside consisted of potatoes, onions (a little too many onions on one visit), cashews, and some typical Indian spices like ginger, garlic, chili pods, and mustard seeds (I think). Its definitely my favorite dish there which is saying a lot since I love Annapoornas dosas. The A.B. is a stunner when dipped into the house coconut chutney (which comes with every order). Something about cashews and coconut belong together.
Two come to an order and theyre $3.99 or so. The menu unfortunately carries no descriptions of the dishes, but its fun to pick new things off the miscellaneous section of the menu.
