City Beverage-- Durham

Having heard good things about this place for awhile now, we tried City Beverage this past Saturday. Instead of an entree my wife opted to order two apps as her meal so we decided not to order any apps to begin out meal. This turned out to be as mistake as it took a good 40 minutes for our dinners to arrive. I had the grilled filet, with garlic chive mashed potatoes, and roasted asparagus. The filet was good but nothing out of the ordinary and a bit small (5 oz.?). The asparagus was roasted to the point that it was a little burnt, wrinkled, and shrivled. The mashed potatoes were delicious. It also had some kind of tomato compote (?) but there wasn't really enough of it to have an opinion. My wife, on the other hand, really liked her choices: grilled beef skewers with some kind of really spicy, sweet Caribbean style sauce and shrimp barbeque on toasted bread, also quite spicy. We opted to have dessert elsewhere (Amelia, next to Chamas) so our bill of $62 with tax and tip for two apps, one entree, one cocktail, and one beer seemed a bit too high. I think their salads and burgers-- which I have had for lunches before-- are better options. So while I give this place a qualified thumbs up I think Federal, for example, offers a better dining experience for the same money.
