I was introduced to a great new beer store/tasting room on Tuesday, City Beer, on Folsom between 7th and 8th.
This place is like no other beer store I've seen. They have a wide variety of individual bottles of specialty beers from around the world for sale. They also have a license to serve beer in the store and will open any bottle in their collection and serve it for a $1 corkage fee above the marked price. The prices are surprisingly reasonable - lower than Plumpjack for most of the bottles I saw.
I bought bottle of Girardin Gueuze lambic for $9 - the owner then chilled and served it in the proper stemware. If they have this at Toronado it probably costs between $20-30 with markup.
They arrange their beer by style, not region. For example Belgian style beers are arranged by single,
dubbel, trippel, and lambic with American examples of the same also on the shelf for comparison.
They also have four rotating taps with 6 oz. pours available for tasting. On my visit two of the choices were Trumer Pils from Berkeley and a German Maibock.
Apparently there is a grand opening party this Saturday though I dont know the details. If you're a beer person, definitely check this place out.
