Citizen Thai - hit or miss!

Went to Citizen Thai in North Beach Friday night and was disappointed.

The cocktail menu is nice- but the Hair of the Monkey (Bloody Mary) and Citizen Cup (Pimm's Cup) we ordered were made with both crushed ice and ice cubes, which created an awfully diluted drink for $7.50.

The Grilled Prawn and Mango salad ($9)was extremely sour with too much lime juice that overwhelemd the other flavors (and I love lime juice). Three bland shrimp that had never been anywhere near a grill sat forlornly on a meager pile of juiliened mango and iceberg lettuce. Not terribly satisfying.

For entrees, we ordered the Pumpkin curry with chicken ($14) and Wok – fried chicken with basil and green curry ($12). The pumpkin curry was phenomenal- rich and hearty with a nice amount of heat. It was also cutely served in a hollowed-out pumpkin. The wok-fried chicken with basil was so boring, so bland and unexciting that we barely ate half of it. I've had better versions of this dish at half the price.

Service was friendly and efficient.

All in all, if I'm having a fierce pumpkin curry craving (which happens from time to time) and I'm in North Beach (which also happens from time to time), I might come here. Otherwise, there are far too many excellent Thai options in the city to pay this much money for small portions and poorly executed dishes.
