Had plans to have dinner with four friends this past Friday, and ended up deciding on The Citizen because the Winterlicious menu looked like one of the better options at the $25.00 price point, and having been there in the past when it was packed we assumed the kitchen could handle the pressure.
The evening was exactly what Winterlicious should be - even though the place was rammed, the service was great, attentive and unrushed. Chef Rodney circulated the room chatting up some of the tables, asking if people were enjoying the food and letting them know about the regular, non-licious menu (obviously using the event as promo for future visits instead of just herding people in and out of the room).
As there were 5 of us, we got to see and taste pretty much every offering on the card. For starters, the Caesar with poached egg was a big hit, as was the split pea soup with salt beef and cabbage. All three entrees were ordered - roast brined pork loin with apple chutney; calamari with clams, anchovy and tomato and (my personal favourite) a simple but delicious roast cornish hen on olives and white beans.
I am not a huge dessert guy, so ordered the house-made cookie plate which was good. Others liked their pavlova and apple crumble with creme anglaise.
The menu was simple but interesting and very well prepared; guests were treated well; and the price point was very good for what was offered.
