Went to Ciao Bella on Newbury St. last night, even though I’d read some less than enthusiastic posts from the hounds.

We started with a pasta appetizer of Alaskan king crab with white asparagus in a saffron cream sauce. The crab was sweet and tender and the cream sauce was wonderfully rich. The asparagus were tough and the dish was littered with shell bits. Tasty, but not as carefully prepared as it should have been.

Both of us were a little disappointed with the appetizer so we decided to keep it simple with the rest of our dinner. My partner had veal parmesan and I had the linguini with shrimp in a garlic cream sauce. The garlic cream sauce was wonderful and the shrimp were sweet and tender. But the linguini was terribly overcooked. It was actually shocking how overcooked it was. I’m not much of a complainer so I let it go without comment. Our server didn’t seem to take notice that she picked up a nearly full plate when were finished and she didn’t bat an eye when I didn’t want to take it home…

The veal parmesan was even less successful. It was overcooked, blackened even, and veal and sauce were very salty. We noted that all our selections were very salty. And the linguini served with the veal was also extremely overcooked.

Service wasn’t so great either. I won’t go there again. We had the items above and a bottle of wine and spent $102 (tax & tip included). For that I could have feasted a dozen other spots. Should have listened to the hounds!
