Best Chowish area to live?

So as a baby hound about to leave the nest of oak park, what neighborhoods should I look at?

Criteria:

Good, chowish food within easy walking distance
L station within easy walking distance
Cheap rent -- a 1 bedroom shouldn't cost more than $800/mo, and cheaper is better
Relatively safe.
A nice park nearby is a plus (I have a hyperactive golden retriever).

So far the places I'm considering are:

Oak Park (hard to find cheap rent)
Forest Park (easier to find cheap rent)
Lincoln Square/Ravenswood/Albany Park - anywhere along lawrence, preferably near either the Rockwell or Kedzie brown line stops.

I've looked at humboldt park, which has great cheap rent, a nice park, and a fair amount of good, well documented food. However, I dunno that it has the safety factor -- I'm worried that it isn't gentrified enough yet -- and I don't know of a nearby L station.

Any other suggestions?

In other words, if you were about to move into an apartment with a dog, a hungry stomach, and no car, where would you go?

Thanks for your help,

Ed
