A few weeks ago I posted to ask where and what the archetypal New York breakfast that I had been dreaming about for years should be. Following chowhounders' recommendations I went to the Clinton Street bakery and ordered pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup and sweet cured bacon on the side (photo attached) I do not have anything to compare it with but it was delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and light, the blueberries plentiful and tasty, the maple syrup lovely and against all my expectations the bacon went well with it, although I would have enjoyed it a little less crispy. I also found another upside to solo travelling-I didn't have to wait very long for a lone seat at the counter. Another breakfast recommendation was for the kitchenette and I had very nice corned beef hash with fried eggs there.
I enjoyed everything I ate whilst in New York. On the first night I needed something very soothing, to help me get over the journey. My New York friend remembered a neighbourhood restaurant she used to like-Popovers on the corner of W86th and Amsterdam Avenue. Except for the eponymous popover served with strawberry butter this was very fine home cooking, and good value at $25 for 3 courses. I would be happy to make cabbage borscht as tasty as theirs and the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes was perfect comfort food. I could have put my head down and fallen asleep in it then and there.
The next night, on a recommendation from a local we went to La rural, an argentinian steakhouse on768 Amsterdam Avenue. I had short ribs-a cut we don't have in England. It was delicious, perfectly cooked as I had asked, tasty, juicy and well seasoned. One of my friends had skirt beef which he said was also very good. What i don't understand is why New York restaurants give such big portions, both the turkey loaf and the steak were twice as much as was edible. I know you can take it home and luckily I was with friends who could and did, but for tourists this is not a viable option and I hate the waste.
Also ate at another local, a chinese called Ollies on the corner of Broadway and W116th street. pea-shoots with garlic, beef in black been sauce and garlic, we may have reeked but left happy. My only disappointment-in all the films and tv I have seen you get fortune cookies in American Chinese restaurants. But not here.
I pigged on the Lower East side with breakfast as above, ice cream from the labatorio del gelato on Orchard Street, a knish from the knish shop and a pastrami sandwich to take home from Katz's. The only disappointment was that when I got home they hadn't given me rye as I had asked, and the pickle was watery. The pastrami however was delicious.
Zabar's was a wonder and the food I ate and the food shops I saw made me feel I would be happy to be a New Yorker-the city's not bad either!
