*** I'd love to hear whatever opinions you have to offer up concerning grub in the Roanoke area. Also, if I missed something on the list (in the section My Research) that can't be passed up, by all means, let me know. I've heard there is a brewery that has its beer on tap at several local restaurants but couldn't find the list. ***
.:| THE TRIP & OVERVIEW |:.
My boyfriend and I are going to be traveling from Savannah, GA, to Roanoke, Virginia, next week for a friend's wedding. We'll be traveling up I-95 --> I-20 --> I-77 --> I-81. We will be eating 3 breakfasts, 2-3 lunches, and 1 dinner in Roanoke.
.:| OUR ITINERARY |:.
--> THURSDAY Arriving in the late afternoon. Camping 2 nights at Clayton State Park.
--> FRIDAY Our free day to explore the area. Evening time, we'll be heading to Salem for a cookout hosted by the bride's family.
--> SATURDAY morning, we pack up camp and head into the downtown area for lunch before checking-in to our hotel (Holiday Inn Tanglewood) at 3pm and getting ready for the wedding at 5PM. The wedding will have a full dinner and an open bar.
--> SUNDAY we will likely need some hangover food in before the drive back down to Savannah.
.:| OUR TASTES |:.
Our tastes are eclectic and adventurous. We especially love little hole-in-the-wall diners and local fare. We will eat anything if you guarantee it will be good....
Breakfast foods (especially out-of-this-world pancake and/or waffles), hot dogs/burgers, Mexican, and Indian are at the top our our list.
.:| MY RESEARCH |:. Chopped Onion; Roanoker Magazine's "2007 Dining Awards"; Chow Hound boards
I've done some research but need to NARROW IT DOWN to the "must haves." The only definite is to stop at HOME PLACE in Catawba for dinner on Thursday. Everything is up in the air. Here is the list:
@ Burger in the Square
@ Carlo's Brazilian
@ Roanoke Weiner Stand
@ Old Market Food Court
@ Nawab (rich, south-Indian food)
@ Swagat (flavorful, north-Indian food)
@ Pit Boss
@ Mac & Bob's (Salem)
@ Local Roots Cafe
@ Martin's Downtown Restaurant
--> BUDGET We'd like to spend no more than $12/per person for most meals. We can spend up to $20/pp for one meal only.
--> DIETARY RESTRICTIONS (1 meal) My mother and her boyfriend are both diet-controlled diabetics. My boyfriend and I will be meeting up with them for our lunch on Saturday.
