Chocolate Cake

Man, sometimes I hate editing ChowNews. Having to read through the best tips for the week from the SF and LA hounds, too busy and too poor to just fly out there....

This (from the posting linked below) set me off this week:

"Save some room for their GIANT Chocolate Cake!"

It's not that it's any kind of mouthwatering description. But the caps on "Chocolate Cake" spoke to me. The poster's right. Chocolate Cake is an estimable thing, a proper noun if ever there was one. It's not like other cakes. And though its trendiness has badly waned, chocolate cake's still an important - an essential! - thing.

Must have chocolate cake now.

Here's what I DON'T want:

1. clever chocolate cake
2. stupid chocolate cake from a mix (although I'd like that better than clever chocolate cake)
3. trendy variations (choc mousse cake, etc etc)
4. chocolate slash cakes (chocolate/mangosteen, chocolate/ginger, et al).
5. a whole cake (must be able to get a slice)

Would prefer to-go (e.g. from a bakery that sells slices) so I don't have to sit through an entire meal just to get the chocolate cake. Sorry, the Chocolate Cake.

Grange Hall many many years ago was the place for the sort of cake I'm speaking about. Where's good now? Again, just plain good Chocolate Cake, please.
