chinese restaurant, oakland

dunno if anyone's written about this yet, but lately I've gone to the "new" Manila Garden Cafe several times... on Webster btwn 12 & 13. Their standard dinner menu is great, especially for the price of $4.99 per item (family style). They changed ownership this past summer, and after a few months of uncertain settling into their new digs (which seems really tiny from the outside) they were able to masterfully handle a traditional chinese banquet for 40 in their upstairs space... amazing food that rivals any in SF.

The best thing about this place is the new owner... she comes out to speak to guests and to make them feel like they are at home or as a guest at a party she's hosting. Maybe that's why whenever I go I see familiar faces now... first-time diners become regulars; especially after they fall in love with the signature dish (not listed on the standard menu). Its the Chiu Chow style catfish, served on a sizzling platter with a secret sauce their chef created.
