Chincoteague

Hi,

Sorry about this but we've removed your post (below). We're trying to herd people back in the right directions, and Virginia should be discussed on the South board. We know some may disagree with this, but it's how the site was set up (many eons ago) and a lot of thought was put into it at the time. Please feel free to repost your very informative post there. Thanks.

Why does such a wonderful place have so many lousy restaurants? Don't get me wrong. The Island Creamery must have the largest waffle cones and the cheapest sundae's east of Skokie. Illinois. Mr. Whippy still provides the greatest soft ice cream (saw at least 300 motor cycle people there this weekend). And, of course, Mueller's still provides you with a nice place to eat great Deleware ice cream and watch the ducks walk by.

But, why does most of the food suck? Every (except for one) restaurant serve the same food. Let me check out one of the menues. Nothing against Bill's, loved it for breakfast and such 20 years ago, before it "upgraded" and became expensive....but why must we eat all this fried food? (About 10 years ago they started to offer broiled seafood...somehow it still tastes fried...never mind) Like we really need another "Deep Fried Jumbo Shrimp", "Crab Imperial"(not fried at least),and why are all Chincoteague Oysters "lightly breaded and deep fried"? And do not forget the "Clam Strips"! Not to mention the "Southern Fried Chicken" that always takes 25 minutes for preperation.
The soups are the same and the expensive restaurants now serve the worst possible version of Pasta you can imagine. So it goes.

Now, this is a place with some of the best available seafood in the Mid-Atlantic. Picked up some fresh oysters and clams from Gary Howard Seafood. They had some of the best Lump Crab I have ever seen at only $21.95 per pound. Nice.

We went to Maria's Family Restaurant and Pizza because we saw the parking lot full. Bad mistake. Do people actually make Tomato Sauce with only Tomato paste still? Why use Cottage Cheese when the menu says Ricotta Cheese? This had to be the worst Italian food since my mother burned the house down. I know, Italians are really Greek. Sorry Greeks, I love Greek food.

The point I'm making is, why are there no good restaurants in Chincoteague? Other than AJ's? It does not look like much from the outside, but it is the best restaurant in Chincoteague. Great wine list, also. The wine and cheese place on Main Street is also nice and the people are friendly.

Ben
