chinatown street vendor -- what is it?

bothrops_asper | Dec 9, 2004 10:20 PM

i was buying some chestnuts and ginger on canal street earlier tonight and i noticed an unusual item for sale in one of the vendor's box: matte black 'pods' about 3" long, they looked like a pair of horns growing out of a blob that resembles stalk end of okra. they were all exactly the same size and texture that at first i thought they were plastic or ceramic. i asked the vendor, who said they were nuts, and should be cooked, not eaten raw. ridiculously i didn't buy any, but i will tomorrow if they're still there, but does anyone know what they are, and better yet, how to prepare them?
