For those of who have spent any time in midtown Manhattan, you will no doubt have seen, waited in, or laughed at the lines for the Halal Guys at 53rd/6th. And if you haven't, you can read up about it here: http://53rdand6th.com/
Well, now LA has its own "Halal Cart" and it's called Chicken and Rice, and nowadays you can find them in DTLA in the Fashion District serving up lunch. Fancy, flash-enabled website, http://chickenandricela.com/, and the obligatory Twitter account, https://twitter.com/ChickenRiceLA
Ok, so intro out of the way, how's the food, you say?
Just. Not. Very. Good.
You get a choice of chicken or lamb over rice.
Ordered the chicken over rice. Several things to note here.
First, it's only white meat, which in the grand scheme of things isn't a big deal because of the obligatory "white sauce" (more on that in a minute), but besides from being a bit dry, the meat was also sort of vapid. Like stale, condensed, squished together Peeps.
Second, the accouterments -- generally lettuce and tomatoes in NYC. Here? Arugula (and spinach I think). Ugh.
Third, the white sauce. This is actually pretty good, and a pretty good facsimile of what you can find on 53rd/6th. It's got that creamy, sweet, tangy flavor you're looking for and expecting. (Note: not diet food, and if you don't like mayo, stay away and do "red sauce").
Ok, and the last kicker? It's going to set you back a full Alexander Hamilton (that's $10 for you non-numismatics). Why is that a kicker? Cuz, it's like fucking $3 cheaper in the heart of midtown Manhattan!
