As always a special thanks to the board for helping us mull through the thousands of restaurants in Chicago. Here is a taste of what we had. I will try and give only highlights and if any lowlights of each place.
Tru Restaurant- Highlights- Chocolate Seared Foie Gras with carmelized banana and chocolate sauce and Squab breast with braised shallots and tarragon jus. This place had it all, great service and cutting edge maybe over the top food. Also, when we left, they gave us Tru Canneles. Does anyone know how to make these? I need a recipe. Thanks.
Topolobampo-Highlights- Limonada and Tostaditas-4 different smears of halibut, chicken po chuc, ham hock and huitlachoche with cheese. Lowlights- It was very good but not great. Maybe I had higher expectations and we only went for lunch.
Charlie Trotters- Highlights-Steamed halibut with hama hama oyster, fennel, fingerling potato and lemon thyme. Also, all his sauces created for each of his dishes. Classicly prepared dishes, I thought all of his sauces that complemented each dish were awesome. Every plate was licked clean.
Kiki' Bistro's-Highlight-Pistachio crusted tilapia with spinich in a beurre blanc sauce. Nice comfortable place with a friendly staff.
North Pond for brunch- Highlight- Sitting on the table for two opening to the pond and the smoked chicken potato pancake with poached egg. This restaurant was worth cutting through the gay pride parade to get to.
Spiaggia- Highlight-hand rolled potato gnocchi with vidalia onions, spring garlic and san marzano tomatoes. This melted in our mouths. Pecorino cheese with truffled honey. Wow. Only complaint would be that they took a long time to take our order and give us bread. After that service flowed smoothly.
Naha for lunch- Highlight-Naha appetizer plate of hummus, cheese, olives, baba ganoush, pita, cous cous, dried beef, naha salad. Nice big window to look out and sat on a comfortable bench with pillows.
Other things we tried included:
Taste of Chicago-Best things we tried were- Harolds Fried Chicken wings, Mustard Fried Catfish from BJ's, Rainbow Ice Cream, Gold Coast hot dog. You have to go at least once.
Al's #1 Italian Beef on Ontario- Italian Beef-wet and hot with fries, Hot Dog with everything. Small complaint- I ordered the large beef and it wasn't that large- Combo 6 was over 10 bucks. Fries were excellent.
Anthony's Homemade Italian Ice- Peach- this was awesome.
Demon Dog- Polish with everything and fries
Weiner Circle- Char dog with everything- I think this was the best dog I ate in Chicago.
Superdawg- Hot dog with everything and fries
Side note non food- also went to the Art Institute for the Seuret exhibit. Excellent exhibit, please support the museum and go see it.
Again-thanks for all the recommendations.
