What is the best cheese(s) to use in potatoes au gratin?

I made it once with parmesan, which didn't turn out so well. It would have worked if I had used another cheese as a base and grated on a smaller amount of parm. I also made it with some smoked cheddar, which was yummier, but still not quite right. What's the standard? I've heard gruyere but I made veggies au gratin with gruyere and thought it was pretty bad.
