Check Please Redux

Vital Information | Nov 21, 2001 09:27 AM

I want to re-start a check please thread even though it's been discussed below and also Ms. Puck's been battered around a bit below. I guess I'm starting anew because I like the show.

I have not seen all of the episodes, but I like the concept of the show. I like the places that the guest critic's pick, as they seldom correspond with what our professional critics talk about. I also like hearing how each guest reacts to the resturant picked by the others.

Last night's episode was nigh perfect. Each place picked by the guests: Manny's, Triple-Crown-Seafood, and Gene and Georgetti was worthy of discussion, and it goes without saying that none of these places get much attention in the foodie press. And, each place presented a certain problems to the neophyte. The chinese place, especially, vexxed the two non-chinese. Ms. VI was more sympathetic to Triple Crown*, but I reminded her of certain meals we've had in chinese resturants where it seemed that our food was not cooked with the same care as at the tables next to us.

I have no problem with Ms. Puck as she serves no more purpose than in prompting the guests. She adds no opinion of her own, and that makes no difference either way. I just think that the show wastes too much of their allotted time with shots of wine pouring and the between segment resturant montages. I guess in a better world, Amanda would let the guests go at each other a bit more.

Do the guests pay for their own meals or are they comped by WTTW?

*Triple-Crown micro-mini review: It's been ages since I've been, parking sucks around there, but I remember it as being very good. Poached shrimps with a dark dipping sauce and crispy skin chicken stay in my eating memory.
