I heard about a new organic bakery in the west corner of Kensington. It looks like the Kensington Wine Market has some like minded neighbours opening up - A restaurant has been approved for the building as well.
Anyways Charlie's Bakery is an oversized shop for it's selection of goods. It's sparsely decorated and definitely unassuming in atmosphere. The real story is in the product. I picked up a fig and walnut sourdough loaf. It was everything I had hoped for. Forget the artisan line up at Safeway (If you had ever thought of it in the first place). Rich coloured figs lace the inside of this bread - crusted perfectly, with the interior - dense and moist and aromatic. Biting into a piece is so satisfying. It begins with the magic dente resistance, the crunch at the back of the molars. What makes it exceptional is the pungent, sourdough taste that follows. A++
I also sampled a brownie and took home a pecan square. They were pretty dull. Fresh, made with organic products I am sure, but nonetheless, a waste of time compared to that sourdough. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other breads.
