I took my sister to Chanterelle for her birthday this past week and both the food and the service were superb. I had the potato risotto with fois gras (a very generous portion and no supplement) and she had japanese style salmon several ways to start. We both had a wonderful fillet of beef in a red wine sauce that was excellent. It came with a potato tart and some spinach. I had an incredible caramel quartet dessert that included: flan, icecream, napoleon and a carmelized pear. It was the highlight of the meal. My sister had a good valrhona chocolate cake & banana ice cream.
We shared the cheese course, but I don't think it was as good as at Gramercy Tavern. Personally I prefer medium and harder cheeses and most all of the cheeses were runny to soft.
We ordered wine by the glass and they didn't gauge us, which I was happy about. I was pleased to see that few items on the prix fix menu had supplements. It is a pet peeve of mine when most items on prix fix menus have supplements, it seems to defeat the purpose.
All in all it was a wonderful evening. Unlike William Grimes in the times, I would rate it a 4 star experience.
