Today I took the long way, driving up Hwy 1 through Santa Cruz then 17 over the hill and then 9 to San Jose. With temperatures in the 90’s, I pulled into Safeway in downtown Los Gatos to get an ice cold bottle of water. Returning to my car, I could see Mama’s Bakery across the street. Not knowing anything about it, I went over to investigate.
Opening the door and seeing racks and racks of cooling baked goods, I closed it quickly thinking I’d walked in the back door by mistake. Nope, the owner/baker came out to invite me in. Basically, it looks like a cramped commercial kitchen full of baking equipment and no display cases.
The owner put a cookie in my hand. Dairy-free, the tea cookie has a sandy texture and chopped nuts. Sold for 25/$6, I asked for a box. The owner gave me more, filling the box with 32 cookies.
Besides cinnamon rolls and the cookies, the only other item on the racks on Friday were loaves of challah, available plain, poppy seed, sesame seed, or whole wheat. I bought a one-pound loaf of sesame seed challah, $4, to take to tonight’s Sichuan chowdown. Tender, light and eggy, the flavors are very clean. After a blessing, we tore it apart and used it to mop up some of the fiery red oil on our plates.
