It's been a long time since I've posted on the New Orleans board, spending more time in other parts of Chowhound-dom. Yesterday in San Francisco, nearly 100 'hounds gathered in Golden Gate Park for the summer's Chowing with the Hounds picnic and potluck. I wanted to let the NOLA 'hounds know that our hearts and tummies are with you.
I brought the defrosted Central Grocery muffuletta as promised from this posting before the Katrina disaster.
The picture below shows the blessed sandwich on the picnic table ready for the unveiling. We mused that this treasure dug out from the deep freeze might be the only extant Central Grocery muffuletta at this time. The bread had some freezer burn and the meats sticking out around the outside edge were a little tired, but the center of the muffuletta was fine. There were the inevitable debates over who makes the best muffuletta in New Orleans.
We were happy to hear that CG had weathered the storm and could be expected to reopen. We'll be keeping an eye on this board for news of our NOLA favorites and look forward to chowing with you soon.
In the meantime, let's do our part to help the restaurant and hotel workers during their time of need by making a contribution to the New Orleans Hospitality Workers Disaster Relief Fund administered by the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
