So I just pulled a 12-hour day at the office and wanted to grub on some new food before heading home. I had noticed that a new place had opened up about 7 months ago near where I live... it's in the corner of a little shopping center on Anderson Ln. near Mopac... so I thought I'd give it a shot.
It's a big, roomy place, with what looked to be a fun bar area for a happy hour, but it's decked out with every tacky, bright colored piece of crap that you can cram into a Mexican restaurant.
The guy assembles your salsa there at your table, according to your spice specifications. Not a bad little novelty, and it actually tasted pretty good.. smoky with creeping spiciness.
The sign outside says "Interior Mexican Food", which was disappointing when I had to hunt through the enchiladas, quesadillas and nachos, etc. just to find something remotely interesting. I landed on the Mole Ranchero (simmered pork and sauteed cactus and onions), which tasted so absolutely nothing like mole that I actually asked if they brought me the right plate. Whatever that excuse for mole sauce is, it was decent... it was spicy as hell, at least. The charro beans and rice that came with it were mediocre and the tortillas were not good.
My bill, with tea and a tip was almost $20. That caliber of food can be found at El Arroyo for half the price.
Typical gutbuster "mexican" food for unadventurous white people with huge appetites. I'll pass.
