Carbone - an Italian find on W. 38th.

Fell into a delightful little Italian place on 38th between 8th and 8th Ave. last night. We thought we had walked down the wrong street - it was about 7 p.m. and the entire area was locked up for the night. But there, on the north side of the street, was Carbone. Since it was the only option at that point, my friend and I had no other options.

The menu listed 4 beers, and it turned out that they were all draft. I asked the waitress to recommend a wine - when she said "try the chianti", I flinched. I hate bad chianti, there's a lot of it around, and this was $7 a glass, so I wasn't expecting anything. It was delicious.

The homemade pasta, fagottimi can salsa di noci, was exceptional. We also shared a calzoni, which was far superior to any I have ever had. The pizza looked great - next time! It really was some of the most authentic Italian trattoria food I have had in the US, and at a fraction of the price of Bar Sutruzzichin (which I love, but can run a big tab at).
