I have been an eavesdropper on chowhound for a long long time, but this is my first post.
I have had to venture out from Chicago to travel the length and breadth of Illinois recently, and for the most part I found the food to be pretty abysmal.
In Carbondale today, however, I happened upon an authentic Mexican meal at a place called The Corner Diner, with a sign that also called it The Poblano Grill. It was at 600 S. Illinois Ave. It was my first worthwhile meal in two weeks. The chips were homemade, the salsa was homemade, and I think the tortillas were homemade as well. We had a couple of dishes there that were very good, the pico de gallo was excellent. All in all, a decent place.
