I saw a brief review in Texas Monthly last year about R&G Bar-B-Que in "Dale" and finally got a chance to try it out today. It's about a 10 minute drive east of Lockhart in a small speck of a town called McMahan. It makes Walburg look like a thriving metropolis.
The place which seems to be only business in McMahan is very country store. You order at the counter in back. The meat menu is simple as can be: brisket or sausage or both. The sides are beans or potato salad. They'll make it into a sandwich or serve you a burger as well (it looked boring). There was also some intriguing hints of chili on a separate menu (chili, chili with beans, chili dog, Frito pie, etc) but they said they didn't make any today--he wasn't too forthcoming when they actually make it.
Anyway, the barbecue was good at best. The brisket was smokey but without that salt & pepper rub that i'm used to from the famous neighbors to the west. The sausage was dry (non-fatty) and relatively tasty. They had sauce that reminds me of Luling--thin and peppery. Big Red is served in a can.
We were glad we went but probably won't make the special trip back. I'd compare it to Mann's in Austin. Nothing remarkable but decent.
