Caldo on a Cold day

Zoe | Jan 5, 2005 02:47 AM

Tuesdays in the wilds of Montebello in a down pour left us hungry for some hot soup and a shrimpy hot soup at that. We came upon El Korita on the 4200 block of E.Olympic. Now the exterior AND interior are reminiscent of a shack about twenty miles south of Ensenada but at 2 pm, there was room in the parking lot and what the h=======l. We had to keep our coats on, it was so cold, because the whole place has kind of a beach shack look/atmosphere with windows open. A few guys through with their lunch watching an unbelievably hokey game show. Even I understood it!

Lunch was Caldo de Camerones ($7.95) and I had a shrimp cocktiel which was $2 less. Soup was just outstanding; the broth had a quiet intensity which comes from fresh tomato base with no added tomato sauce or paste - lots of cilantro but with a really deep shrimpy taste - lots of big shrimpys too. My cockiel was very light (no tomato juice or V8 here) and also had chunks of avocado (not on the liquid diet I am on although a moderate amount of shrimp. but heck it was raining - and a goodly portion of shrimp here too. Partner had a carne asarda soft taco on a Handmade tortilla - that was delicious.
Nice service although the wait person did not speak a word of English. Restaurant does have a B rating and could certainly do with sprucing up but it doesn't affect the food.

A find and worth a visit.
