American Cupcake joins the legions of cupcake shops in the Bay Area.
However, they're taking the cupcake concept several steps further. If you're like me, you sometimes need a place to go after dinner that isn't quite a sit down restaurant but isn't as hectic as a bar or club. Light snacks in addition to alcohol is also something I'm always looking for
Enter American Cupcake, 1919 Union Street (near Laguna).
In addition to cupcakes, AC serves coffee by day and wine, beer, champagne, and cocktails by night. The menu features All-American comfort food: variations on PB&J (with different jam flavors or fresh fruit slices), macaroni and cheese, sliders, hot soups, popcorn--it's a regular carnival!
For dessert, there are cupcakes, mini cupcakes, candied apples, caramel apples, cotton candy, and whoopie pies. For those who like sugar with their alcohol, AC offers cupcake flights: 1 cupcake + 1 drink in a matching flavor.
It's a cute, if ambitious, concept. But the food is good, the cupcakes are fluffy and moist with creamy frosting, and the people are friendly.
Favorite cupcakes (out of about 6 tasted): bubblegum, lemon, and red velvet.
Favorite savory food: surprisingly, the soups!! But really, all the food was tasty.
As they say when you leave, have cupcake dreams!
