Went to Cafe Centro , in Grand Central , last night. It was not our choice exactly , we had purchased a gift certificate at a charity auction, but they did not not know until we paid the check so it did not have any influence over food/service.
After we requested to be moved from the entrance of a mostly empty restaurant they put us next to the waitress station, which was fine . altho with the waitress being two feet away you would think she would pay attention.
We got a nice baguette with two kinds of butter , one had olives or something which was nice. We should have left then , The wine took at least 15 minutes to get to our table. had a very reasonable Sancerre that was pretty good . The risotto , although flavored OK , had a pretty significant skin that had developed which is a little offputting. The goat cheese in a puff pastry was pretty good , a special off their plum menu. As for mains the surf and turf was cooked properly , but it was underseasoned. Also had the seared duck breast - which my wife thought was chicken or something other than duck , as it was white in appearance.
It came with a side of something that was plum related that tasted like one of those jamaican rum cakes - absolutely terrible. In the meantime service came to a complete halt - couldnt flag anyone down for more wine or water. Then we split a tart of some kind that had big unripe plums on it and little else. The worst dessert we have ever had and told the waitress so. She said the chef agreed with us and reduced our bill by 20 per cent which was more than satisfactory. Even though we werent paying it was the right thing to do.
All in all it was an aweful dining experience. Stay away.
