I just had an delicious lunch at Cafe 817 in Old Oakland (on Washington between 7th and 8th St.). I have been to 817 a number of times and always enjoyed it, but this meal was probably one of the best lunches I have had in the three years I have been working in Downtown Oakland, so I thought I would share.
I had the "817 Sandwich" which is Nieman Ranch Roast Beef. The meat tasted slow roasted, it basically melted in the mouth, nothing like regular roast beef. There was not much else on the sandwich, but it was drenched in very tasty olive oil, which added to the intensity of the flavor.
The sandwich was accompanied by asparagus - perfectly cooked to bright green but still a little crunchy, and also potatoes.
The meal was around $10.75, which is certainly high for lunch around here, but it was worth it! I had a limonata to accompany it, but 817 also has excellent coffee, which would have been a nice ending to the meal if we had had time.
