BYOB at Dumpling Inn, San Diego

Went to Dumpling Inn last night. The food was just as awesome as ever (the spicy eggplant with pork is really good). To my surprise, the couple at the next table produced a large can of Kirin beer, and the server brought them glasses.

On the one hand, I felt bad for the guy who brought it because a) Kirin sucks, and b) it's "Japanese" (as Japanese as a beer made in Canada can be, anyway), not Chinese. On the other, I was pleased to know this is apparently sanctioned.

Has anyone else tried this here? Was I witnessing a VIP, or is this a known policy of Dumpling Inn? I'd love to bring some good witbier on my next visit.
