Some of you might be familiar with The Burger Kitchen started by the Father-Son team of Alan and Daniel Saffron from Australia. Reviews indicated some hits and misses over the past couple of years. It seems you could have Pat La Frieda burgers imported from New York. Also a menu of 22 kinds of burgers, some costing as much as $28.
I was curious about this place, so when I had the opportunity last spring to buy a $30 voucher for $15 from Living Social, I took it. I bought it last spring and nearly forgot about it. Having recently rediscovered it, I decided to go there today with my wife.
The menu had changed, cooks had changed and the owners had changed. The Saffron's were no longer involved and the Libertine group (local night club owners) had taken over last month.
Now not knowing what to expect, I was rather pleasantly surprised.
The new menu consists mainly of a basic $6 beef burger. Also turkey and vegetarian burgers.
You can add extra items at a cost, but I had a brioche bun, bacon and avocado with my beef burger which came to $7 total. Fries or onion rings were extra.
My burger was delicious, a meaty 8 oz.'er with perfectly fried bacon and avocado. The onion rings my wife ordered were nice and crisp, as were my fries.
I'm not a beer drinker, but they have 30 kinds of beer available in bottle.
There were serious service issues, as the new ownership has been in place maybe a little over a month, and this might be a deal breaker for many. After ordering, the food took a long time to come. Finally the burgers came but without the fries and rings, and I need my fries with the burger. We stopped eating the burgers to wait for the fries and rings to come.
The strawberry shake I ordered tasted a bit off and not very ice creamy.
My wife ate half her burger and needed a take home container. The waiter said he would bring it and seemed to have forgotten about it. 5 minutes later, my wife reminded him again and he had someone else go in the back to get the container.
The wait staff was always polite, they just didn't have their act together. We were there after the lunch hour and there weren't that many people there.
Still, service issues aside, it was the best burger for $6-7 I've had in a long time. With those very good rings and fries, the food nearly made up for a multitude of service errors.
The Burger Kitchen is at the intersection of Third and Crescent Hts. Nearby were Olio Pizzeria, AOC and Robata Jinya. Street parking is a real problem there, and there is a generic valet for that whole area for $4.50.
