I'll be on the road from Feb 10-28 and need suggestions for really cheap snacks, pit stops, diners, delicious fast food, good cheese shops, tasty bakeries or grocery stores along the Trans Canada Highway from Halifax to Ontario (especially in Fredericton, Riviere du Loup, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres, Chelsea, Ottawa, and Kingston).
I'm particularly interested in eating at a sugar shack (cabane a sucre) in the province of Quebec (within a half hour drive of Quebec City, Montreal or Ottawa) and would love to hear from anyone who has tried one. I've looked online and there are tons of suggested sugar shacks but I need your help narrowing down the options to find the best value for money. Will I be there too early to enjoy the sugar time feast (one that includes pea soup, tourtiere, beans, salted back bacon, etc.)? I'll be in Quebec City Feb 11-14, Montreal Feb 14-21, and Ottawa Feb 21-25.
Thanks ever so much! I'll provide a full road report upon my arrival in Toronto. Judging by this webpage, there aren't too many english-speaking people who have tried chowhounding for cheap but delicious eats in New Brunswick and Quebec. Does anyone know of a french language website similar to Chowhound?
