I love breakfasts in Portland but typically a Sunday breakfast or brunch in Portland means waiting in line. This time we made reservations (en route) on the phone for brunch at Accanto on Belmont street. We had never been and it looked good on the internet.
We arrived 30 minutes ahead of schedule so we crossed the street and went into Bare Bones Cafe (bar and coffee shop) for a Bloody Mary. Wow. They make a really nice one: spicy, stiff, lots of pickled veg and a nice chewy beef jerky strip across the top. Sat at the bar. Kind of a dingy place, nice bartender. Customers there were reading papers and "hanging out", lots of folks sitting alone, very quiet.
Accanto was full but not bad at all compared to other spots. We had a nice window seat for two set and waiting for us:)
We started with ricotta doughnuts with lemon curd. I think there were 6 little balls of goodness (they disappeared fast before I could count:) They were light and dusted with powdered sugar. The little dish of lemon curd to dunk them in- tasted fresh and tart. Really nice. Good coffee there too.
I ordered another Bloody Mary (to compare) and my spouse ordered a sparkling wine cocktail. Both were nice, but I much preferred the Bloody Mary at Bare Bones. This one tasted watery and too sweet. The wine cocktail was much better.
I ordered the Duck Hash with sweet onions, potato, and chard with harissa cream and poached eggs. It was stellar. Really well prepared, eggs were perfect and the duck was tender and delicious. I will have to try my hand at harissa cream over eggs at home.
My spouse ordered Creamy Polenta with garlicky braised greens, poached eggs and chili oil. This was also really good, very rich and smooth, chili oil use was liberal and packed quite a kick at times, the dish needed the greens for balance however they were a bit "tough" so were left on the plate. We both agreed that the Duck Hash was better :)
Service was great. Very attentive, coffee cups were well monitored, nice vibe. I would go there again in a minute for that Duck Hash!
