I have it on good word from my Russian masseuse that the best Russian brown bread in town is made at the Stolichnaya Bakery in the tiny Whole Foods plaza at Santa Monica and Fairfax.
This led our conversation down the road to other things... mainly caviar.
"Oh God," she said. "Brown bread, butter, and caviar-- I could eat this all day." I felt my lats pop as she dug into my back with the fervent gusto of a masseuse whose appetite had been stimulated.
"Do they sell Russian butter?"
"No, unfortunately." Snap, twist. "But caviar is delicious and not so expensive."
"Really....?" Interesting. *Crunch* "Ow. What caviar do you like?"
"The one in the little can. They are all good."
Hm, vague. I ask again, and she answers similarly. "Next time you come, I bring caviar." Sounds like a plan.
But my conversation begs the question.... what's the best bang for the buck when it comes to the caviar that can be found on Santa Monica Blvd? And by bang for the buck, I mean highest quality for the lowest price... not bad caviar at a low price.
