Brooklyns Bánh Mì

The Rogue | May 29, 2002 05:02 PM

Well I finally made it to check out Brooklyn’s Bánh Mì places today. After a two hour drive of stop and go traffic and 30 miles I made it.

My first stop was at An Ðông. It is run by a father / daughter team. The father sits chatting with a few friends and playing board games until someone requests a sandwich. He then runs into the back kitchen and prepares the first half by putting on the pate and meats. He then hands this off to his attractive daughter behind the counter who toasts them in her oven and adds the veggies. The daughter told me that her father makes sure he gets the best possible fresh local meats available.

I had the Bánh Mì Dac Biet, this is one of the meatiest and creamiest Bánh Mì I have ever had. It is an overstuffed version suitable for NYC. No lightweight here. When asked if I wanted it spicy I was told they have both Jalapeno's and hot sauce. Of course I got both. I also got the best Vietnamese iced coffee I ever had and a can of Pennyroyal leaf drink. If you want a meaty, creamy, and sweet crisp veggie Bánh Mì this is the place to go.

My next stop was about 8 blocks away at Ba Xuyen. They have a great selection of Bánh Mì here and after the last place I was ready for a let down. To my joy I instead got a treat. The best Bánh Mì I ever had. I got the Special and it was. Supposedly this place gets frozen imported French meats and pate. They use a very sweet and tasty pickled daikon / carrot veggie mix plus the usual cilantro, cucumber, etc. they also use 4 different sauces. This makes the sandwich something special. a fantastic combination of contrasting flavors.
